GeoBC: Information Services

GeoBC Structure

GeoBC's Information Services Branch provides data administration and data management leadership, guidance, standards and expertise to a wide range of client groups. The branch also promotes data management governance in support of the Natural Resource Sector Information Council and Working Group.

The Information Services Branch takes the lead in the consolidation and integration of geographic data and management of the Province's Geographic Information Warehouse – the Land and Resource Data Warehouse and enables clients to broadly access geographic data with the provision of geographic web services and self serve tools such as Data Discovery, Data Distribution, and iMapBC.

The branch is responsible for developing and maintaining the Ministry's Data Architecture and Data Management Plan. The Architecture Strategy is committed to providing flexibility, agility and choice in geographically enabling the BC public sector.

A key component of the strategy is the creation of a flexible, service oriented architecture that can adapt to the accelerating pace of change that is being experienced in the field of geo-spatial enablement while exceeding client expectations in the delivery of specific geographic business needs.

Information Services Branch provides an Architecture Framework that will:

  1. Geographically enable BC Public Sector content
  2. Provide an enterprise foundation that allows others to contribute without duplicating effort
  3. Broadly extend GeoBC content and services
  4. Expand the public use of content and services
  5. Maximize opportunities to share and innovate
