Dear Reader:
Re: Endorsement of the Vancouver Island Summary Land Use Plan
On behalf of Cabinet, we are pleased to endorse this Summary Land Use Plan for the Vancouver Island region and confirm direction to participating ministries to implement. the plan.
This Summary Plan provides, under one cover, the key components of strategic land and resource management decisions made by government for Vancouver Island as a result of its 1994 Land Use Decision. These components include reports and announcements made since 1994 on protected area boundaries, special features, protected areas, and resource management zone objectives and strategies.
This document will assist government agencies, the public, and stakeholder groups by providing a concise guide to future management and planning of land and coastal zone resources. Components of the plan related to forest development will be established as a higher level plan under the Forest Practices Code Act to provide direction to statutory decision-makers. The Vancouver Island Interagency Management Committee will have the responsibility of coordinating plan implementation, monitoring and review.
We would like to thank First Nations, local governments, stakeholders and the public for their contributions to development of the many components of the Vancouver Island Plan. The varied processes have demonstrated that diverse interests can work together on future management and planning of land and resources. We encourage these interests to continue their involvement in the Plan through community resource boards and plan monitoring committees.
We look forward to continued implementation of the Land Use Plan and the achievement of sustainable development on Vancouver Island.
