Nanaimo Estuary Management Plan

The Nanaimo River Estuary is the largest estuary on Vancouver Island and the fifth largest in British Columbia. The Nanaimo Estuary Management Plan process was established for the purpose of balancing human activity, economic development and environmental health in the Nanaimo River estuary through a comprehensive plan for co-ordinated estuary management. The plan was developed by the Nanaimo Estuary Management Plan Steering Committee, comprised of members from Federal, provincial and local government agencies and the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Representatives of the Nanaimo Community Estuary Stewardship Coalition, Nature's Trust and the Forest Industry User's Group also participated in meetings and provided direct input into the development of the plan.
